„The way through the Christmas trees 2019” has concluded – the viewers’ favourite has been announced and the festival anniversary catalogue presented

The 10th landscape object festival “The way through the Christmas trees” has concluded with a thank-you event for authors and cooperation partners, the presenting of the award for the viewers’ favourite and the new catalogue dedicated to the anniversary of the festival.

The viewers’ vote for their favourite installation in the festival’s anniversary year went to “Kob Art” Ltd, in cooperation with “Eversheds Sutherland Bitāns” law office for their creation “Lighthouse”, which they described as follows: “On passing by, you won’t go unnoticed, on passing through, you won’t be indifferent when looking up – time will come to a standstill and take you to another dimension. Find the route through the lights and just stop, slow down, even just for a moment. Rest assured that your way will be lit.”

In this festival anniversary year, a catalogue “The tale of Riga’s Christmas tree” was issued, which details this unique, one-of-a-kind festival in the world and contains some of the original 200 exhibits created by artists, students and creative personalities. The authors’ pieces are arranged in the catalogue, not in chronological order, but by 9 different themes, symbolically denoting the similarity with young fir tree saplings. The diversity of ideas and signature creations, the messages from the authors, the variety of materials, uniqueness of the creations and the skilled craftsmanship, the specially selected locations for each creation in the city’s urban landscape – these are the unique qualities of the festival.

The catalogue dedicated to the festival will be available at Riga Central Library, and will be presented to the City of Riga’s cooperation partners abroad, spreading the word of this festival unique to Riga.

“Within the wider context of cultural events globally, the festival is a unique project. This is the greatest value of the festival, as it is ours – made in Latvia.
The way through the Christmas trees is like a treasured and polished jewel, which we have discovered thanks to the author of the festival’s concept, Guntars Kambars. On addressing those present at the thank you ceremony, Baiba Šmite, Head of the Cultural Board of Riga City Council’s Department of Education, Culture and Sport said: While visiting Japan with a cultural programme, when speaking to the volunteers one of them said: “You have a special festival in Riga, dedicated to Christmas trees. We will have to visit you in winter!” This proves that the festival concept has taken root and Riga is associated with The Way through the Christmas trees”.

In the anniversary year, the festival organisers invited people to take part in the competition “An alternative Christmas tree”, by sending photos of their festival creations in their homes, gardens or workplaces. Those taking part included private persons, restaurants, the Latvian Association of Notaries, and schools and kindergartens.

The festival “The Way through the Christmas trees” is sponsored by Riga City Council and organised by Riga City Council’s Department of Education, Culture and Sport in cooperation with the Art Academy of Latvia.
