The 9th landscape object festival in Riga „The way through the Christmas trees” has begun

From Friday, 7th December, inhabitants of Riga and visitors to the city are invited to view the 39 landscape objects of the festival,   “The way through the Christmas trees” – Christmas trees that will surprise onlookers with their unusual shapes, interesting artistic interpretations and variety of materials used to create the objects. A specially prepared map, which will be available online at www.eglufestivals.lv, and at tourism information centres, will help navigate “The way through the Christmas trees” when the streetlights switch on.

During the festival, from 7th December to 13th January, 2019, 18 new landscape objects created this year, as well as favourites created in former years, will be seen in Riga. Original works have been created especially for the festival, by professional artists and students from the Art Academy of Latvia, as well as the creative community and entrepreneurs. In this festival, the process and the results have equal significance.

“Over the nine years since it first began, the landscape object festival “The way through the Christmas trees” has become a familiar symbol of Riga. Every year, this month sparkles to brighten even the darkest of the seasons, and invites onlookers to think creatively and appreciate the urban environment by looking at it from a different perspective over the holiday season.  In total, over the years of “The way through the Christmas trees” festival, more than 200 objects have been prepared and exhibited in the urban environment.  Over the years, news about the festival has spread outside of Latvia, and several landscape objects from “The way through the Christmas trees” have been displayed in the capital cities of our neighbouring countries – Lithuania and Estonia. The national media of other countries, such as Germany, Russia, Japan and Italy, have shown an interest in the festival, acknowledging it as original, and one of the most unique and tourism worthy events in Riga, and Europe”, explains Guntars Kambars, Head of the City Festival Coordination Unit, Riga City Council’s Department of Education, Culture and Sports.

The festival “The way through the Christmas trees” is supported by Riga City Council and is organised by Riga City Council’s Department of Education, Culture and Sports, in cooperation with the Art Academy of Latvia.
